Chapter 13

“Help me gather the game,” I said, hushed. “Quickly, before Cable and Milton come out and notice it’s gone.”

Faine and Draven went to work, and Ravana moved, gathering a card here and a card there, but she hardly maneuvered with any urgency.

“I take it ‘Lady E’ looked different when you last played the game, too?” I asked her.

She shrugged and fluffed at a curl of her hair. “I don’t remember. It was so long ago.”

Draven glared at her. “I don’t think she did. Not that there’s much to go off of with that.” He gestured at the illustration of the corpse, the Xs over the eyes taking up most of the face.

He, Faine, and I had most of it stuffed into the box in the next few seconds, Draven snatching the few cards Ravana had in her hands from her and stuffing them inside.

She clamped her lips together, as if mildly amused. “The game won’t be nearly so exciting without a mad old man shrieking throughout the night.”

I frowned at Ravana’s insult of poor Milton. “I don’t intend to play it. I want to check it for traces of magic.”

Ravana laughed shrilly and put a hand on her hip. “I don’t think you need to run any tests to decide it’s no normal game.”

“Even so. What else do I have to go on?”

The bathroom door opened. “Harlot, you get out of this house!” shouted Milton.

Ravana stiffened and walked right out the front door, no doubt insulted that he’d continued to address her by such a term.

She turned into a bat and flew off into the sky.

“Uncle Milton, please. You can’t use that word. Come on now. Wash your hands.”

Cable’s voice echoed, followed by a toilet flush and the water running.

I had seconds before they got out here and asked for the game back or questioned why I had it tucked underneath my arm in the first place.

So I panicked, running for the open front door. I was out and down the front walk to the sidewalk before someone bothered to follow me.

Of course it was Draven. He shuffled up my front step beside me. “Faine is covering for you. Your visiting professor noticed your backside rushing out the front door.”

Good going, Dahlia.

But I had more important things to worry about.

Stepping inside my own home, I had to quickly set the board game down on the end table by the door to catch Broomie for her “welcome back” hug. I noticed a bucket of cornhusks on the kitchen counter. Goldie must have come over after the store had closed. Since she sometimes kept Broomie company for me, she was welcome to walk into my house whenever. I’d have to thank her, no doubt catch her up with everything that had happened now that the dust had settled.

Broomhilde wagged the end of her shaft eagerly, then her brush cocked up, staring over my shoulder.

Draven hovered in the doorway.

“You may come in,” I said, and he stepped inside, shutting the door behind him.
